Balancing career and study: My Housing Academy journey

Margaret Hanrahan

My experience with the Housing Academy

I am currently completing the CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing through the Housing Academy, and it has been an incredibly positive and rewarding experience so far. Working for one of the largest approved housing bodies (AHBs) in Ireland, I wanted to further develop my knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the wider housing landscape, which this qualification has so far enabled me to do.

A balanced qualification

The CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing has offered a strong balance of theory and practical learning that can be applied directly to my role at Tuath Housing. Covering leadership and management in housing, strategic and business planning for housing organisations, housing in context, managing partner relationships, customer focused housing services, ethical practice, and professionalism in housing, the range of topics has given me a much broader understanding of both the executive leadership operational and strategic aspects of housing setting me up perfectly for my current and future career.

Supported through each step

I have been incredibly fortunate to receive such strong support from my colleagues at Tuath, as well as from the tutors and the Housing Academy team throughout my learning journey. They have created a welcoming and supportive learning environment where learners feel encouraged to participate, ask questions, and share experiences.

Learning alongside professionals from across the housing sector has also been a valuable experience, allowing me to gain different perspectives and build connections with others who are equally passionate professionals in housing. The qualification has been more than just a learning experience but has offered networking opportunities as well.

Embracing a new challenge

Balancing study alongside a full-time role can be challenging, but the course is well structured and the support available makes it manageable and enjoyable. You are able to manage your own time and study schedule, which allows for flexibility around different working patterns.

The experience has increased my confidence, strengthened my leadership knowledge, and broadened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the housing sector today. Most importantly, I want to use what I have learned to make a positive contribution to the association and help deliver the best possible outcomes for residents and communities.

Go ahead and take the plunge!

I would highly recommend the Housing Academy to anyone working in housing who wants to deepen their knowledge, develop professionally, and invest in their future career. It has been a genuinely worthwhile experience, and I look forward to completing the qualification and continuing to build on everything I have learned.
