This online training course will give you an overview of social housing in Scotland over the past 100 years.

It explores the historical context of housing in Scotland and looks at several of the core demands of the service.

It reviews all the 21st century legislation in Scotland and considers the most up to date situations. It also covers issues of regulation, demographic change and the housing emergency.

What will I learn?

From this training, you'll learn about:

  • The history of social housing over the past 125 years
  • The Housing Scotland Act 2001 and Scottish secure tenancies
  • Homelessness and allocation
  • The difference between councils and housing associations
  • Rents and asset management
  • The Scottish Housing Regulator (SHR)
  • A brief introduction to the private sector.

Who should attend?

This course is beneficial for housing associations, housing co-operatives, charities and other organisations that use shared housing as part of their housing provision.

Staff who are new to housing, people moving from one sector to another and anyone who has a general interest in housing including those who work with partners.

Meet your trainer

Eileen McCallum

Eileen is a popular trainer with 45 years’ experience in social rented housing. She began training for Chartered Institute of Housing in 1979 and quickly became a sought-after trainer due to her depth of knowledge and her engaging style.

Her passion is asset management and she has a particular interest in dampness, condensation and mould, to the point of being called a nerd! She is also an excellent trainer for presentation skills and public speaking having lectured at a local college on this topic for over 14 years.
